FAQ
How much do high school students have to pay to attend Tooele Tech?
High school students can attend Tooele Tech free of tuition and fees. However, students are responsible for purchasing books and supplies.
Are there any scholarships to help me cover the cost of textbooks?
To help lower costs for high school students, several classrooms offer classroom sets of learning materials available to those scheduled through their high school Skyward schedule. Additionally, Tooele Tech offers a High School Digital Book Scholarship, available to high school students in the TCSD, which covers select digital book subscriptions for specified programs. Other scholarships may become available during a student’s enrollment. Students can apply for available scholarships at any time throughout their enrollment.
Can my Tech Certificate transfer to other post-secondary institutions?
Yes, Tooele Tech credits and certificates can transfer to many in-state colleges, including Snow College and Utah State University. The receiving institution determines how credits will transfer. For more information, visit Snow College’s Tech Connect and USU’s Stackable Degrees.
Can a high school student enroll at Tooele Tech outside of their high school, Skyward schedule?
High school students who wish to enroll directly through Tooele Tech can do so during regular operating hours: 8 AM to 8 PM (Monday-Thursday) and 8 AM to 2 PM (Friday). Direct enrollment through Tooele Tech means that the student’s program will not be included in their high school schedule through Skyward. Generally, students should be 16 years of age or a junior to enroll. High school students who enroll directly are not charged tuition and fees, including for summer enrollment between their junior and senior years. However, they are required to meet admission requirements as outlined in the How to Enroll section.
Can I earn high school credit if I enroll directly through Tooele Tech?
Yes, students can request their Tooele Tech credits be transferred to their home high for high school credit. As directed by the TCSD, students are eligible to receive 1.0 high school credit for every 3.0 credits completed at Tooele Tech using a P/F letter grade.
What programs or courses can high school students take?
It is encouraged that students work closely with their high school counselor to determine which program aligns with the educational and career goals established through the student’s Plan for College and Career Readiness (PCCR). High school students can enroll in courses from the following programs: (Program titles are linked to each program’s information page. There you will find the individual classes in each program.) How do I enroll through my high school Skyward schedule?
Generally, students should be 16 years old or a junior. Students can schedule Tooele Tech programs through their high school schedule during Arena scheduling or through their high school counselor. Scheduling for Tooele Tech programs is offered in a 2-period, block schedule. Students can choose to enroll in more than one block period for the same program, if applicable. Due to the rigorous nature of the college-level curriculum for each program, it is recommended that students do not self-register for more than one Tooele Tech program at the same time.
How do I drop or change a Tooele Tech program in my schedule?
Students who want to make changes to their high school schedule in Skyward need to work directly with their high school counselor. Changes to your Skyward schedule may impact access to your program of interest based on available space. Students wanting to add additional scheduled hours outside of their high school schedule need to work with a Tooele Tech enrollment specialist.
How do I receive grades and credits for my Tooele Tech program?
Tooele Tech uses a competency-based education system, allowing students to advance by demonstrating proficiency in concepts and skills, regardless of time, place, or pace. High school grades are determined by attendance, competency level, and progress rate. To earn an “A,” students should complete at least two college credits per semester or approximately 70 competency hours. Note that grades do not reflect overall program progress or certification.
Will I complete my program before I graduate high school?
In a competency-based education system, it is not a guarantee that you will complete your program before you graduate high school. It is important to understand the credit hours required for your program, set goals, and monitor your progress. Students can schedule hours outside their high school schedule or during the summer to help complete their program. Students can also continue their enrollment after graduation. Upon graduation, tuition will no longer be waived. However, Tooele Tech offers options for financial aid and scholarships to help cover costs.
How is attendance recorded at Tooele Tech?
Good attendance is a top factor for succeeding in your program. Attendance is recorded in your Student Portal and is not entered in Skyward. Students who arrive to class more than 5 minutes late will be marked tardy; more than 20 minutes late will be marked absent (the same goes for leaving early). Tooele Tech follows the TCSD calendar for students scheduled through Skyward. Students should notify their instructor when they are going to be absent. However, there are no excused absences, including school-excused activities, and students will lose hours toward course completion when absent. According to the Department of Education, students will be involuntarily withdrawn from the college if they miss 10 consecutive days.
How do I use my student ID badge?
Students use their ID badge to clock in and out of class in the Northstar Student Station to record their attendance. Students are not able to clock into class until 5 minutes before their scheduled time. Students should speak with their instructor or Student Services if they are unable to clock in. Clocking in for another student is a direct violation of the Student Code of Contact and is prohibited. Student ID badges will be issued the first week of school. See the front desk if you don’t receive your ID badge or need a new one.
How does lunch work at Tooele Tech?
Students are responsible for determining how to get lunch. The following are some options: 1) Bring a lunch, 2) Purchase lunch at the Simply Bliss Café (located on campus), or 3) Eat at the CLC cafeteria (for students who are scheduled at Tooele Tech for the full day).
Is transportation available to Tooele Tech?
Yes, students can utilize the Community Learning Center (CLC) bus that drops off and picks up students in front of the Tooele Tech entrance. Otherwise, students are responsible for their own transportation.
What is the College’s course retake policy?
Open-entry/defined-exit programs consist of courses divided into modules. Students enroll in one course at a time and must complete all required coursework by the course end date, which is available in their Student Portal. Please note that the College’s course end dates do not align with the high school semester schedule in Skyward. If a student cannot complete the course by the end date, they will be placed on a written improvement plan. If the course is not completed by the third attempt, the student will be invited to return to their high school to explore other classes better suited to their needs.
Is the college required to follow high school IEP, 504, or Health Plan accommodations?
As a college institution, we are not required to follow accommodations in the student’s high school IEP, 504, or Health Care Plan. Students seeking accommodations must follow the application process for requesting Americans with Disabilities (ADA) accommodations as outlined on the Students with Disabilities section.
What is technical education?
Technical colleges provide career education and training that is designed to provide students with applicable knowledge and skills needed to be successful in the work place. Technical education delivers a huge advantage because students are trained using the most advanced technology available. Upon completion of their program Tooele Tech students are highly skilled and sought after by employers because of their quality technical education.
What types of degrees or certificates are offered?
Tooele Tech offers certificates and licensures in many different industries that are “in demand” in and around Tooele County. Completion of a certificate in their chosen program shows that they completed their program and passed each module with high competency.
Is technical education respected in the community/work place?
Yes it is! In fact at the technical college we are dedicated to providing students with quality education that they can take literally “take to work”. Many of our programs have internships and/or clinical programs that provide real-world experience for our students! Because of Tooele Tech’s outstanding reputation for providing relevant education, local businesses and employers often come to us FIRST to fill their employment needs!
What is the benefit of self-paced education?
Self-paced education “you learn your way in your own time.” Studies show that students that are engaged in a self-paced learning environment learn material more efficiently. This approach allows students to work quickly through areas that they may have a strong knowledge base in, and yet slow down when they come to material that may prove to be more challenging. The end result is that students who finish a self-paced program are more likely to enter the work place, or 4 year college or university, and already have the skills to be a self-motivated, capable self- learner, and independent worker/student. Students are required to meet a minimum standard of 80% progress.
How do we get started?
It’s easy. Talk to your student’s high school counselor/CTE coordinator today or stop by the college to speak with one of our enrollment specialists.

We fully support students enrolling at Tooele Tech if it supports their graduation plan.
How will counselors know if there is an opening available for students to enroll?
Space is limited, please work directly with the Director of Student Services or the Registrar for any questions about enrollment availability and/or exceptions.
When and what time are courses offered?

Direct enrollment through Tooele Tech means that the student’s program will not be part of their high school schedule through the high school SIS. o Counselors recommending students for our standard hours should still be involved in making this decision and then refer the student to Tooele Tech’s student services to craft a schedule for the student which is outside of the normal two-period block schedule.
How much do high school students have to pay to attend Tooele Tech?
Tooele Tech does not charge tuition or fees to high school students. Costs are associated with programs that require individual workbooks, licensed digital textbook subscriptions, program uniforms (e.g., health care) and health care program prerequisites (e.g., immunizations, TB test, drug screen, etc.). A detailed cost sheet and book list is available from the Student Services office at Tooele Tech.
